Nailing Your Customer Avatar
The most expensive thing in marketing is talking to everyone. Here's how to reach the perfect avatar, step by step, through internal and external research, and turn it into a ready-to-use Audience One-Sheet.
“Women, 25–45, interested in fitness.”
That's not an avatar, it's a population segment. Far too generic, and nobody sees themselves in it. When you talk to everyone, you talk to no one.
“I help postpartum women lose 2 to 4 kg in 30 days and feel good in their body again.”
Specific, emotional, measurable. A good avatar describes a real person, with a real problem, in their own words. And you only get those words through research, not off the top of your head.
Avatar Research = Internal + External
Two directions that complement each other. The first tells you what people think about you; the second, what they think about your industry in general.
1. Internal research
What people say about you- Comments on your ads
- Social listening (mentions, stories, DMs)
- Reviews (site, Google, marketplaces)
- Post-purchase surveys
- DMs and sales calls
You're looking for: the problems to solve, objections, and the exact way your customer speaks.
2. External research
What people say about your industry- Reddit (niche threads and communities)
- Google (searches, “people also ask”)
- Amazon (reviews of similar products)
- Facebook (groups and comments)
- YouTube (comments on videos)
- Local competitors
You're looking for patterns: what people repeat, the same frustrations and the same desires.
Put it in an Audience One-Sheet
Everything you gather goes into a single sheet, structured in 6 blocks. This becomes the “bible” you write ads, pages and emails from.
